(IB-January 16, 2009) Last night in Laredo Texas there were two events that needed covering.
The continued success of featherweight Juan Carlos Burgos (24-0, 17 KO's) was not marred by the not surprisingly tough and persistent Juan Carlos Martinez (15-11-1, 5 KO's) in the main event.
The young Burgos still has a long way to go, but was able to finally take out the pesky Martinez when the bout was ended after Burgos landed several solid shots forcing the referee to step in and end the bout in round twelve.
Most irritating were the comments by analysts Teddy Atlas and Brian Kenny who spoke as if we were seeing the next featherweight champion in the still maturing Burgos.
This fight was "made for radio" because Burgos showed himself to be limited in both hand and foot speed. (more)

I really used to like Teddy Atlas and his comments. There was a time when I would use his words as wisdom but Teddy has not been that guy for a long time.
For some reason his success as ESPN's commentator has rattled his brains for the worst. He now thinks his word is gospel in boxing. His antics of yelling at the referees and downgrading officials and participants has become unruliness and childish.
He now reverts to using his ESPN exposure to promote and advance his thoughts of how boxing needs to be.
Teddy needs to go back to commentating on the fights and leave the excess alone!
You are not alone Amigo... We have seen Teddy with 2 bullhorn just as he said the man don't have the KO power second later the kid knock the guy out and we then watch Teddy play his bullhorn... The man don't know anymore about this new kids in the rings... just think he wants one (1) National boxing Commission (God Teddy) as Ring-master... God Bless America
Teddy may rub some the wrong way but his heart is in the right place. Boxing is terribly corrupt and officials are too often biased in favor of one fighter over the other. Too many bogus decisions see losers win and winners lose. Teddy is one of the only guys out there in the media who actually CALLS it the way he sees it. I don't always agree with him but most times I think he's right. He even admitted he was wrong when he said the earlier FNF fight sould have been stopped but the losing fighter showed grit and went the full six. Teddy is THE MAN! Anyone who accepts all the crooked shit that goes on in boxing won't like Teddy.
come on, everybody calls it the way they see it don't they? HBO, Sho Time, etc, they all blast bad decisions, corruptness, etc. Atlas isn't special.
Just because Atlas was a decent co-trainer many years ago doesn't make his word the truth, it's his opinion only. And furthermore, he, like EVERYONE, in the sport, has his own personal agenda. The more he rants and raves and fools like the guy I'm commenting at below who say's he's the man, who give him somekind of credibility, remember, he's been gunning for a national commission since he got on ESPN. Why? So he can be the boxing Czar.
Mayweather never wanted the fight, it was all a pre emptive strike, in case he lost, which he has a real fear of with Pacquiao. Just like he did with Stevie Johnston at 35's, Marga-cheeto at 47's and Mosely at any weight. Zab Judah whooped his ass for 5 rounds, Pacman does it all fuckin night and he KNOWS it in his heart.
Mayweather left $40mil on the table, NOT Pacman, he has a real promoter and can easily make that cash, in few fights, which unlike Mayweather, he's willing to take.
My two pennies worth...
I have to admit, I've lost a little respect for Teddy Atlas, not because of his out burst and crybaby antics. Bottom line the man knows what he's talking about in boxing.
Where I lost respect is when he did not man up and apologize to Manny Pacquiao for his insinuations of malice.
You can be the best there is but if you're not a man you are nothing!
Why try and pass the blame to Tim Smith or whatever his name is. Tim's not the one who said these things on the air it was Teddy, So why should Tim have to apologize?
As far as Floyd Mayweather is concerned, he deserves to lose out. I can't believe all these writers are trying to lay blame on both sides??? Is Manny not willing to play by the rules of the boxing commission, as I understand, it's Floyd that feels the boxing commission is all of a sudden inadequate. So He wants to change the rules!
I hope Manny never gives him the opportunity to make big money off a fight with him.
To: Lucer, anonymous #1 and anonymous #2...Teddy Atlas has deteriorated as an unbiased boxing analyst and has fallen victim to what we commonly refer to as "the media within the media".
The "crooked shit that goes on in boxing" is exemplified by both Teddy Atlas and ESPN...
To: anonymous, hitman and "BB" King...The Mayweather plan backfired and Teddy Atlas fell intheir tangled web. But the one thing I wish all to remember is how ESPN left Atlas out to dry. Their reputation is at stake every time a mistake is made on air. They seem pretty arrogant regarding this issue and I, for one, am waiting for their apology along with that of Teddy Atlas. Can you ever give credibility to ANYTHING you hear from the Friday Night Fights crew? I will watch the fights, but with the volume down...
espn should fire teddy atlas he has no right whatsoever to a defamatory remark to any anybody in the sport this the result lack in education in his part unless the espn is run by uneducated people
i agree espn should fire teddy atlas don't even have appetite to watch espn anymore because of the derogatory remark of teddy atlas on manny pacquiao espn should have the highest standard that is acceptable to viewer, i didn't know that your teddy atlas is lower than bum with no dignity. fire him!
