My Nickels Worth of Contests... This Year

IB-July 23, 2010 - Well, here we are in the hot time of year we call summer, so I thought I’d write this piece and talk about the five HOT boxing contest I would like to see this year and being realistic and doable contests.
First, let me omit the Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather discomfiture! I’m tired of hearing all bickering, he said, she said (or did not say) going on between both sides. If the fight happens, I’ll watch it, if it does not, then I promise I will not jump off a tall building in a single bound. There are still promising fights to be made by promising fighters that fight for the pride of being the best.
Here we go, starting with the fifth match-up and winding down to the first and most desirable.(more)

PACQUIAO'S DONE ALL HE CAN

PACQUIAO'S DONE ALL HE CAN BY STEPHEN S. JOHNSON
(IB-JULY 22, 2010) There is no doubt whatsoever that the highly anticipated fight between Manny "Pac-Man" Pacquiao and Floyd "Softest hands in the west" Mayweather, Jr. will not go down anytime soon, and maybe/possibly NEVER.
The idea that Mayweather and all of his cronies, specifically Leonard Ellerbe, are now insinuating there never were negotiations for a bout is ridiculous and a slap-in-the-face of all boxing fans and journalists that have been salivating at what was considered to be the richest fight of all-time.
One must look no further than the fact Pacquiao has decided to give Mayweather every concession asked for with the only hurdle being the signature of the once Pound-for-Pound King, Mayweather. (more)

LUNDY'S MOUTH WRITES THE CHECK HIS BUTT CAN'T CASH

(IB-JULY 10, 2010) ESPN2 FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS gave everyone the opportunity to see "Hammerin Hank" Lundy (18-1-1, 10 KO's) eat a huge slice of humble pie when he was stoppped in the 11th round by John Molina (21-1, 17 KO's).
Lundy inexplicably termed Molina a "dumb fighter" earlier in the day and was forced to back up those comments by an at first confused Molina.(more)

SOLO BOXEO BACK TO THE MILE HIGH CITY OF DENVER

DENVER (July 10, 2010) - SOLO BOXEO/TELEFUTURA broadcasted live from Denver, Colorado where in the main event Cuban Erislandy Lara (12-0, 7 KO's) took little time in dismantling Puerto Rican William Correa (8-4, 8 KO's) who was true to form in either knocking out his opponent or getting knocked out.(more)

Why Chavez Jr. vs. Cotto should not take place?

Why Chavez Jr. vs. Cotto should not take place?

July 9, 2010 - I feel that the only winner in this match up between Chavez Jr. and Miguel Cotto would be their promoter (Bob Arum, Top Rank). Arum is playing into national pride concerns pitting Puerto Rico vs. Mexico. Chavez Jr. needs to fight several respectful fighters before proving himself to such a challenge. Duddy was not much of a challenge as his defensive skills are questionable, and if you do recall he did rock Chavez Jr. in the 6th round.

If he faces Cotto now he’ll get destroyed. There’s no way in hell that we should be offered to watch this farce on pay per view at $49.50. This kind of match up only hurts boxing. After a massive promotional campaign, uneducated occasional boxing fans will get wrapped up in the Puerto Rico vs. Mexico aspect of the fight then purchase it on pay per view. They’ll be disappointed after the bout and swear to never pay $49.50 for boxing again.

I believe that this fight should not take place but knowing the sport of boxing the way it is money driven, not fan oriented, it will take place. It will give boxing another black eye and alienate more fans or potential fans from the sport.

Would this fight be good or bad for boxing?
